http://www.lagrandeobserver.com/news/story.cfm?story_no=8023POLICE PROBE POSSIBLE SIGHTINGS OF ABDUCTED KIDS Published: June 1, 2005 WALLOWA ¿ A possible sighting was reported here Sunday of two children kidnapped May 16 from a triple murder scene in Idaho. Also Sunday, someone may have tried to abduct two girls in Wallowa. About 5:30 p.m. two children thought to be similar in appearance to those kidnapped near Coeur d'Alene were reported in a blue Dodge pickup with Idaho license plates up the Bear Creek Road south of Wallowa. "It could be something, or it could be nothing," said Wallowa County Sheriff Fred Steen when he released information Tuesday afternoon. Since Monday he had received information requests from about 10 news agencies, including ABC and CBS networks. But because of the sensitive nature of the case, and to avoid compromising the safety of the abducted Idaho children, Steen said he would release no further information. Local authorities did immediately notify the FBI, Idaho's Kootenai County Investigation Task Force Team, adjacent states and Oregon counties. KXLY-TV News, Spokane, called this the latest lead in the biggest investigation in Kootenai County's history ¿ a case that has involved 1,700 hours of overtime and a cost of $10,000 to date. The station reported that the pickup was a 2001 dark blue extended cab Dodge with a specific Idaho license plate number. However, when authorities tracked the number, it was found to be assigned to another vehicle. The station also reported that the fingerprint analysis of the home where the crime occurred revealed only those of the home's occupants. An Amber Alert was issued May 16 for an 8-year-old girl, Shasta Groene, 3-foot-10 and 40 pounds with long auburn hair and hazel eyes, and her 9-year-old brother, Dillon Groene. He is 4 feet and 60 pounds, with a blond crew cut and blue eyes. In Wallowa Sunday, a suspicious person was also reported to have offered a ride to two girls. "It seems he wouldn't take ¿no' for an answer," Steen said. That incident was reported Monday by one of the girl's parents who thought it was strange. It is being investigated as an attempted child abduction, Steen said. Gary Fletcher |

| excerpt: Since the discovery of the bodies of Groene's ex-wife, Brenda Kay Groene, 40, her son, Slade Groene, 13, and live-in boyfriend, Mark Edward McKenzie,37, authorities have said neither Steve Groene, his son Vance Groene, 21, nor Jesse Groene, 18, were suspects in the brutal slayings. All three bodies were found last Monday night bound and bludgeoned and the couple's two small children -- Dylan Groene, 9, and Shasta Groene, 8, -- gone. An Amber Alert remains in effect for the children. During the program, which is transmitted over the Fox News Channel, Steven Groene also admitted he and Brenda Groene argued the Friday before the killings about his request to take the children on an unscheduled visit for a few days before starting a two-week, out-of-town vacation. He said she denied the request. |

MY FRIEND WHO LED ME TO THIS TRAGIC STORY SAID THE CHILDREN ARE JUST A FEW MILES FROM THE AREA WHERE THEIR MOTHER WAS MURDERED...
EXCERPThttp://www.fcpotawatomi.com/feb_15_04/nations.htmlNez Perce Indians fight to preserve lost land from housing by Andrew Kramer Associated Press Writer JOSEPH, Ore. (AP) _ More than a century after Chief Joseph delivered one of the most heartbreaking surrender speeches in history, the Nez Perce Indians are girding for battle again - this time a legal one. The tribe is trying to stop construction of 11 upscale homes on a grassy ridge near the tribal cemetery that includes the grave of Chief Joseph's father, Old Chief Joseph. The grave is on a 5-acre site that serves as the trailhead for a National Historic Trail that follows the route Joseph's band of Nez Perce took in 1877 during their desperate flight from a U.S. Cavalry unit. That flight ended 1,500 miles away when Chief Joseph surrendered, saying: "I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." The Nez Perce and two other Northwest tribes have filed a legal challenge to the proposed housing development with the Wallowa County Board of Commissioners. The tribes argue the whole ridge is a site of cultural significance and a national historical treasure. |
